Sonography

NOTICE:  Applications are accepted now for the Fall 2018 cohort.   Be sure to review the prerequisites; there have been some changes.   There is not an application deadline.  Applications are continuously accepted from qualified applicants.  When the number of applications from qualified applicants reaches 20, a wait list will be maintained.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), sometimes referred to as ultrasound, is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body.

It is also used to guide needles during biopsies when samples of cells from organs are collected for lab testing (i.e. test for cancer in breast tissue). Unlike x-rays, sonography is a radiation-free imaging modality.

The goal of the program is to prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Upon graduation, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to perform sonographic examinations of:

The Abdomen

Superficial structures (Breast, Scrotum, and Thyroid)

Non-cardiac chest

Gravid and nongravid pelvis, both transabdominal and transvaginal

Job Opportunities

  • Sonography is being used increasingly in acute care hospitals, imaging centers, and physicians' offices; it is used in all medical specialties.

  • The California Employment Development Department projected a 42.6% increase in DMS employment from 2012-2022.
