Program Description

The Cosmetology and Esthetician Departments prepare students to become the creative, well-trained professionals demanded by today's beauty industry.

  • Programs prepare graduates for California State Board licensing examination.  
  • Lecture and practical application are taught by experienced industry instructors.
  • School schedule: Full time schedule meets Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30. 
Program Student Learning Outcomes
  • Apply principles of shampooing, hair shaping and hair styling
  • Apply permanent waves, chemical relaxing and soft curls
  • Analyze scalp and hair
  • Apply all phases of hair coloring and lightening
  • Provide basic nail care and artificial nail application
  • Learn and apply State Board sanitation and disinfection procedures
The Esthetician Learning Outcomes
  • Apply principles of skin care 
  • Analyze and recognize skin disorders, types, conditions and disorders
  • Learn and apply various multi-function skin care machines
  • Learn and apply hair removal techniques
  • Learn and apply State Board sanitation and disinfection procedures
Application Process for both programs:
  1. Apply to Santa Barbara City College at the Student Services building, located at 721 Cliff Drive Santa Barbara, CA 93109 or online SBCC.edu homepage and electronically apply.
  2. Review the Academy Information and Application packet.  Questions? Send us an email if you need any help.  
  3. Submit an Online Application. 
  4. Attend the mandatory Cosmetology Academy orientation.  
  5. Program attendance availability is limited. First priority placement into the program is determined by the following:
    1. Date of submitted Cosmetology Academy application.
    2. Proof of admission to SBCC with student identification K number
    3. Attendance at mandatory Cosmetology orientation.
    4. Fulfillment of all SBCC College enrollment requirements. 
Cosmetology/Esthetician Academy Orientation Meetings

The mandatory orientation meeting held a couple weeks prior to each start date will have detailed program information and a tour of our facility.

Registration codes for a seat in the program will be awarded for 25 students and the remaining applicants will be waitlisted.

Cosmetology Program

The Cosmetology Program develops knowledge in the science and techniques of hair, skin, makeup and nail care. The program is approximately one year, 33.5 credits, and meets the minimum requirements of 1,000 hours required to apply for the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology license exam in Cosmetology.

Esthetician Program
 

The Esthetician Program  modules that are designed to develop skill sets in the science and techniques of administering skin care treatments and hair removal.  The program includes 2 consecutive 8 week courses. Upon successful completion of the program student will have received 16 College units and 600 clock hours of applied preparation in lecture and lab experience for Cosmetology 131 and 132, the student is eligible to take the State Board examination to become a licensed esthetician.
